Community Feedback Session: Critical Questions the District Must Publicly Address Before Any Consolidation Decision
Updated: 6 days ago

As the district evaluates future facility and grade configuration scenarios, community members have raised hundreds of thoughtful questions and concerns that extend far beyond the three proposed options. While opinions differ on which scenario is best, a clear theme emerged across all discussion groups: residents want assurance that every consideration is thoroughly reviewed, publicly discussed, and transparently addressed before any final decision is made.
The feedback highlights major concerns about transportation, enrollment projections, school identity and traditions, special education services, staffing impacts, financial assumptions, career and technical education programming, future state funding, and the long-term use of district facilities. Community members also questioned whether alternative solutions have been fully explored, whether changing political and funding landscapes could alter the need for consolidation, and how the district plans to support students, families, and staff through any transition.
Many participants emphasized the need for greater transparency around costs, savings, enrollment forecasts, transportation logistics, and the potential impact on families choosing to remain in the district. Others called for stronger student, teacher, and community involvement, including requests for additional public input opportunities and consideration of a community-wide vote to gauge public support.
These questions should not be viewed as opposition to change, but as essential due diligence. The community is asking district leaders and the school board to openly review, respond to, and publicly document these concerns before moving forward - alongside community members. Doing so will build trust, improve decision-making, and ensure that any path chosen reflects not only financial realities but also the long-term educational, social, and community needs of Dubuque students and families.
The message from the community is clear: before a decision is made, these considerations deserve a thorough, transparent, and public review. See the compiled feedback for other considerations here:
